In 2006 Ethrog revealed another ground-breaking technology, Dry Blotting. Using the principles and intellectual property acquired during E-Gel development, the company presented the iBlot– a dry, bufferless system for transferring biomolecules (e.g., proteins) from the separation gel and onto a nitrocellulose or PVDF membrane. Compared with conventional, time consuming 'wet' transfers, the iBlot procedure is complete in just seven minutes, making it the fastest blotting method available and opening a considerable bottleneck in protein analysis.
The iBlot system consists of the innovative iBlot Gel Transfer device – a programmable power supply and transfer platform, and four different transfer kits – giving the option of two membrane sizes (Mini / Regular) and two compositions (nitrocellulose or PVDF). Each transfer kit is composed of top and bottom dry stacks, between which the separation gel is sandwiched. Once the lid is closed, a powerful, 5A current causes the fast migration of samples from the separation gel to the membrane underneath.
